Let Us Do The Worrying For You

Does North Carolina require ignition interlock devices?

There is no doubt that drunk driving is a serious issue that law enforcement and lawmakers constantly battle. There are many ways a court may punish you if you are convicted of a DUI. Your punishment often includes license suspension and fines. In some cases, the court may also order you to install an ignition interlock device on your vehicle, according to the North Carolina DMV.

An ignition interlock device connects to your ignition system. It requires you to take a breathalyzer test to check the level of your blood alcohol content when you get behind the wheel. If you pass the test, your vehicle will start. If your BAC is too high, you cannot start the vehicle.

The court assigns the requirement for an ignition interlock device to your license for certain convictions. There is the opportunity to waive the requirement for the device based on income, but you must do this in court and receive approval of the judge.

Such devices are often required when you get your license back after having it suspended due to a DUI. These devices are also used in cases where you get driving privileges for work when you have a suspended license due to a DUI conviction.

Do keep in mind the court holds the final say. If you have to get an ignition interlock device, you must pay all the costs associated with installing it in your vehicle and maintaining it. You hold complete responsibility for the device and all financial liability. This information is for education only. It is not legal advice.
